Flying A Drone in the City

Due to the recent drone laws enacted by the Canadian Government, introduced by Marc Garneau, the Minister of Transport, it is quite a bit more difficult for you to operate your drone within a "built up area" which definitely would include almost every corner of a big city!

There are ways though, that you can fly in the city.  If you apply for an SFOC (Special Flight Operations Certificate) from Transport Canada, you may be granted special privileges to fly drones in places that most people would otherwise be banned.

What is the Transport Canada SFOC for Drones?

The SFOC is a document that outlines the proper policy and procedures for operating a drone commercially, often including reduced limitations in comparison to someone flying a drone recreationally in the city.

You may have heard about the Transport Canada exemption from having to apply for an SFOC, however, the conditions of the exemption are fairly strict, and would restrict someone from flying in a built up area.

How do I get an SFOC to fly a drone commercially in Canada?

One of the requirements to get your SFOC in Canada is to receive UAV Ground School training.  There are several companies across Canada that offer Ground School Training.  M3 Aerial Productions offers drone training across Canada, and is a Transport Canada registered Ground School educator.  Whether you want to operate in real estate, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, fisheries, forestry, police, conservation or many other industries, the ground school training is the same.

Our trainers are professional educators, members of the Canadian Armed Forces and Air Force Pilots.  You are in expert hands during our courses, and you will learn how to communicate with NAV CANADA effectively, and how to mitigate risk sufficiently to allow for drone operations inside, and outside the city!
